ORIGIN
Sofia Boutella is an Algerian-born hip-hop and street dancer. She’s also an actress and model. Her film credits include StreetDance 2, Star Trek Beyond and The Mummy. Boutella was born on April 3, 1982 in Bab El Oued, Algiers. Her father, Safy Boutella, is a jazz musician, and her mother an architect. The family moved to France in 1992. Boutella completed her studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

CAREER
Boutella developed an interest in dance at an early age. She started out with classical dance before switching to rhythmic gymnastics at age 10. She was also a member of the French national rhythmic gymnastics team. Boutella won the Battle of the Year competition in 2006 as a member of the ‘Vagabond Crew’ dance group. She’s since appeared in music videos by Rihanna, Madonna, Usher and Ne-Yo. She performed as the lead in Michael Jackson‘s 2011 posthumous video for the single “Hollywood Tonight”.

Boutella starred as “Eva” in the British dance-drama film, StreetDance 2 (2012). She followed up with a supporting role as “Gazelle” in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015). The film was directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson. Boutella was cast as an alien scavenger “Jaylah” in Star Trek Beyond (2016). Her upcoming films include The Mummy (2017) with Tom Cruise, and The Coldest City (2017) with Charlize Theron.

As a model, Boutella is known for her appearance in advertising campaigns for Nike Women. She’s also modeled for brands like Reebok, Puma and Adidas. She’s currently signed to IMG Models.
