Display Cabinet - IKEA BESTA MyFigureCollection.net
It is difficult to find a decent display cabinet as what I needed was something that was not expensive, have a decent display space, a glass door to protect against dust and didn't look ugly. After researching around, it found that IKEA had the best looking display cabinets that didn't break the bank.
DETOLF cabinet
I looked at maybe getting a few of the DETOLF display cabinets as a dedicated display stand as I had seen a few people talk about they had used it for their collection. Its not too expensive, around $80/unit, so it wouldn't be too bad. The problem I soon realized is that if I bought a few of these units, I wouldn't have any place to store all of my other stuff. So now on top of being a display case, I needed something that could be multifunctional, i.e. do more than just display my toys. As a result I decided that I needed something that can be both a bookshelf and display cabinet.
BILLY system
I looked at the Billy system of bookshelves as they were inexpensive. A regular cabinet [202cm tall x 80 cm wide by 28 cm depth] without doors can be purchased for less than $100 CAD. The problem I found that it had very few door options and no drawer options. It was cheap but didn't fit what I wanted so I decided to play with the EXPEDIT system.
EXPEDIT system.
The most commonly advertised Expedit [185cm tall x 185cm wide x 39 cm deep] system is a 5x5 box with equally sized smaller boxes with no back. You can get it for approximately $200 CAD. It is meant to be more of a display unit and had more depth but I found that the area in each square didn't have enough space to fit my K-ON! band together so I had to terminate that idea.
BESTA system.
My crtieria seems to be getting pretty stringent and I was running out of options. I have always seen the BESTA units but didn't really give it much thought until they had a sale recently. With their online tool, I managed to configure a set that I liked. It had doors to store all of my other stuff, a decent display area with a thin aluminum bezel on the glass door and drawers to store my miscellaneous stuff. So off to IKEA I went to buy the numerous frames and accessories. After a good chunk of change later, I set off to put it together. I think the first cabinet took me 2 days to put together as I had to learn where all of the pins for the doors, drawer and shelves needed to go first. After the initial learning curve of the first cabinet, the remainder was very easy to do albeit tedious.
Here is the end result. picture/870201&.... I haven't peeled all of the protective film yet but it is supposed to be the high gloss white look with the white frame.
